One of the best scenes for visual acting was scene 7. this was the horse and trap scene. It was good because even though all the actors had to work with was an old wicker basket, they managed to create the image of two people riding in a carriage. They did this by bobbing up and down and swaying from side to side. They also shouted things like giddy up and made a whipping action towards the horse. Everything they did was supported by sound effects. The lighting in all scenes was good as it created the places and made us feel as if we were actually there. These were; the gobo of Eel Marsh House, a tall dark and eerie building that created a feeling of discomfort. And a cross (crucifix) to represent the inside of the church, along with a leaf to represent the outside. The set behind the two gauzes was brilliantly concealed and surprised us when it came into the play. One section behind the play was used to represent two settings. The cemetery and the childs bedroom. Covering the bedroom furniture with old dustsheets that you would have found in a theatre during a production, created the cemetery. The period that child died was late 19th century and the furniture represented this. It was mahogany and very expensive. There was padding on the rocking chair, which was red to symbolise blood. The toys and clothes are neatly stored and folded for the little boy, this shows that even though he was dead, Jennet and Alice still cared for it and one of the dolls was a golliwog, which also shows period as they would probably be banned if brought put now. The Music box played Swanlake. There was an even bigger shock in act two when we saw it in disarray after Jennet had vented her anger at not being able to kill Spider, Kipps canine companion in the marshes. This again told us of Jennets deranged State of mind. Second gauze reveals arched stairway, which he walks up revealing his silhouette. This was also effective as, again, it was a surprise to see it appear. These were made to appear by the use of the lighting from above shining through the gauze. The use of the second gauze impressed me even more than the first one as when used you could not see the nursery in front of it. Both actors did brilliantly throughout the performance, here is a brief itinerary and description of the parts they played; Acting as old Kipps Pip Donaghy- He walks on very shyly with nose in script, not very confident in his own acting ability (and rightly so! ). He speaks quietly with no emotion (monotonously). We realize how boring and rubbish old Kipps is at acting when he comes back on, this time with a pair of glasses, and speaks with real confidence and moves with prowess. Old Kipps looks the actor in the eye, it must be told he says, to show his age the actor leads him upstairs hand in hand. He snorts instead of sniffs, and walks a bit kift, this is because Tomes is a comic character. Arthur old Kipps now becomes the actor young Kipps boss. Hes now well spoken and clips the end of his words, he now becomes joyous, and laughs as this character, making him seem friendly and approachable. He sits casually and blows his nose, a feat not accomplished with any other characters, he also taps his foot, another sign of happiness. In the first part of the play and he is still reading from the script, however. as mentioned earlier he now wheres glasses, and with this he learns his lines and can act. He now speaks in a well-spoken Yorkshire accent. Holding his head high (confidence) he makes eye contact with young Kipps because he is friendly and bobs up and down. As the barman he is not well spoken, and when young Kipps mentions Alice Drablow he acts shocked and moves away and acting shocked again, starts to stutter and talk slowly. Back as old Kipps and he is now going through various emotions as he watches the play progress from the wings of the stage, for instance when the actor says that he doesnt believe in ghosts he holds his head in despair of his own naivety. He acted Jerome by dropping slightly at his knees to show that he is older than Daily but not quite as old as Tomes. The woman in black killed Jeromes child and when the actor asks who the woman with the wasted face is, Jerome wont look. The actor then asks Jerome if he could find him someone to help with the paperwork at Alice Drablows house, Jerome says you will find no-one suitable shudders and walks away. As Keckwick he is non-communicative, he never looks at the actor and grunts occasionally but when the actor (young Kipps) mentions that he is going to the Drablow house he goes uhhh! In a surprised manor, he also holds the reigns differently to when he played Daily. When the actor is explaining of the death of his wife and kids he hugs himself and looks very upset. DOG They acted the dog by ;- 1- looking down at the same time to show the dog. 2- He (the actor) looked down and shouted here Spider and 3- He tilts his head away from the dogs wet tongue. Acting as The Actor Colin Hurley When we first hear Colin Hurley he has a big loud voice, which he amplifies brilliantly from the back of the theatre, when playing the part of the actor, he is also very confident in doing this. When narrating about his family telling ghost stories he spoke as an excited young child, the line he spoke was, were telling ghost stories. When he went back to being Kipps he spoke quietly and with fear, because he was remembering the woman in black, he also sounded angry and resentful of the fact that people were treating ghost stories as light entertainment, he spoke with real bitterness. When he walks onto the train he walks sideways and dodges air to make it look as if it is a crowded railway station with lots of people. On seeing the woman in black at the graveyard he acts cautiously and scared. When he walks from eel marsh house he panics and collapses in horror of the woman in black and when he realizes that the horse and trap sounds are ghosts he looks terrified with his eyes wide open, eyebrows drawn and tensed muscles. On rescuing Spider he lay flat on the floor down stage right and lent over the edge as if the pit was the marsh. He tenses his arms to show that he is struggling to tug Spider out of the deep pull of the marsh, he eventually pulls spider up and collapses on the stage. When hearing music from the jewellery box, he pauses and focuses on the door to create tension. Acting to show his toddler son Joseph, he puts hand down towards the floor and leans slightly to show hes holding Josephs hand, he took small slow childlike steps. He mimed lifting Joseph by bending down low, putting his hands child width apart and smiled as he put his happy child onto the pony and trap. Later in the same scene he describes his childs death as, crumpled on the grass dead! He pauses to show us how difficult he finds it to speak of this tragic event. He then quietly sniffs as though trying not to cry. I really enjoyed watching The Woman in Black and would recommend it to anyone. The quality of acting was superb and with limited resources in the way of props, they portrayed the obstacles brilliantly, especially the horse and trap (see earlier). The Director Robin Herford, who has directed this play for fourteen years and travelled to Tokyo to direct the Japanese adaptation, wanted the audience to experience the fear of this ghost story through their imaginations and not through the use of special effects, which can be seen far too easily on T. This is because wood is the smoothest surface out of the three, meaning that less energy will be lost as heat/friction and so more will be put in to the actual bounce of the ball. I also think that Carpet will be the worst surface of the three, as it is a very rough surface, which is likely to make the ball lose a great deal of heat/frictional energy. I think the Cork surface will come between the two, because it is rougher than wood, but smoother than carpet. Another thing that I predict is that when the Drop height is reduced, the rebound height also is reduced. Results Analysis: Using my results, I found out many things: The bouncy ball bounced most on the wooden surface. The bouncy ball bounced higher as you increased the drop height. More Gravitational Potential Energy is stored in the ball when the drop height is increased. I got these facts by looking at the line graphs shown previously. It was easy to spot which surface made the bouncy ball bounce highest. To prove that the best surface is wood I worked out the gradient of each line. Formula: Gradient = x/y Line of best fit Graph of drop height vs rebound height: Carpet Surface: As you can see from these sums, Wood has the greatest gradient, whereas carpet has the worst. The reason for wood being better as a bouncing medium is because it is much smoother than the other surfaces. Carpet is extremely rough in texture causing more friction when the ball hits it, which in turn causes more energy loss. Both of the graphs I have drawn are very similar in shape. They look absolutely identical but there are minute differences. I also noticed a relationship between the drop height and the surface used. As I increased the drop height, the ball bounced a considerable amount higher. This was the case for all surfaces. Never did the rebound height remain constant when if the drop height was changed. Conclusion: There are many reasons to why I got the results I did. There are many factors that a ball may have to influence its bounce. Some examples are: size, weight, material, etc. These characteristics as well as the bounce surface influence how well or badly a ball will bounce. The wooden surface, being the smoothest of the three, proved to make the bouncy ball bounce highest. The reason for this is because less energy is lost as heat/frictional energy. This means that there is more kinetic energy, which would mean that the ball would bounce more. The cork surface, being in between carpet and wood I terms of roughness, turned out to be second best. More energy than the wooden surface is being lost by heat/sound energy, but less is being lost than the carpet surface. The carpet surface was the worst. The ball just died out as soon it hit the carpet. This is due to its roughness and material. Carpet makes the ball lose the most heat/sound energy. The loss of more heat/sound energy would mean that there is less kinetic energy available, so the ball will not travel very far. As these were proven in my results, that would mean that my Prediction was absolutely correct. The best surface was wood, and the worst was carpet. The rebound height did decrease when the drop height decreased. Evaluation: On the whole I think that the experiment went quite well. I obtained sufficient results needed for a good experiment write up. I took three results for each drop height of each ball. By doing this, I was able to average the three and also exclude any results that did not fit in with the others. I think that my results were fairly accurate. The theories that I predicted were right. My graphs look fairly good, however there are a few anomalous points here and there. The method I did was not excellent, and most certainly did not give me the most accurate results I was capable of betting. In the time I was given, and the equipment I was restricted to, I would say that my method was fairly good. The Method was enough for the results we needed, but if I was to do more research and was to get more accurate results, then it could be improved hugely. The experiment had far too much space for human errors. For example, the wooden surface we used was just our workbench. Due to this there were dents and scratches in the table. Also, we had to make an accurate guess to where the rebound height was by placing our heads in level with the maximum place the ball bounced up to. After looking at the graphs with best-fit lines, there were only a few odd results. This is expected due to the conditions we were in. As the drop height increased the rebound height increased. There were some factors, which we did not take into account, which could have affected the experiment slightly: There could have been a some wind which affected the bounce of the ball The temperature could have increased or decreased from room temperature in which case the bounce of the ball would have been affected. The ball could have hit a dent in the workbench in which case the bounce of the ball would have been affected. The ball could have not been measured properly. I dont think that I had enough evidence to draw a suitable conclusion, as there is always space for improvement. The results I took could not be necessarily that accurate. I could have performed more than three trials on each surface, in which case my average would have become very accurate. If I had better equipment, then my results would be extremely accurate, and the graphs would give would show an extremely positive correlation. If I was given the chance to do this experiment again, I would want to use more high-tech equipment, to get more accurate results. Nearly 60% of the population is in the ‘economically productive’ age group and with the alarming fact that the rate of youth unemployment in Pakistan is 8%, higher than the overall unemployment rate of 6% this year. Almost half of the Pakistani workforce is unemployed according to the figures released by the Pakistan Economy Watch. The low growth in labour productivity has not matched the rising labour force and due to the low literacy rate coupled with ongoing economic depression, poverty is constantly growing. Since the scientific revolution and the times of the Age of Enlightenment, our knowledge and the way we are educated has progressed through the advancing scientific methods. In our modern times, colleges give us the option of studying, for example, applied science or theoretical science. Science has always fascinated children, but with time the motivation dies down. Reading a textbook surely giving us the knowledge but in the end we learn, give exams and forget. A practical demonstration on the other hand would enable the child to grab the idea better, en-rooting the knowledge permanently in their minds. The government has to not only focus on successfully executing growth-oriented policies but manage our agricultural sector.

Surrounding the panels are small heads, floral motifs, and niches that contain miniature statues of Prophets. Leonardo Bruni created the iconographic formula, taken from stories of the Old Testament. Ghiberti followed the plans and created 10 scenes ranging from the Creation of Adam and Eve to the reign of King Solomon. The top left panel is the scene of the Creation, Temptation and Expulsion of Adam and Eve. The top right panel is the scene of Cain murdering Abel. The next panel is of Noah and the Flood; then Abraham sacrificing I saac; Jacob and Esau; Joseph being sold into slavery by his brothers; Moses receiving the Ten Commandments; Joshua and the battle of Jericho; David and Goliath; and finally Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. All the panels were gilded in gold, giving them a uniform and seamless perspective. Ghiberti was a master of using perspective in his works. The attention to detail is apparent when you examine closely the sculpted figures in each panel. They all seem three-dimensional. The way in which Ghiberti sculpted each figure, gives them a shadow against the background which is key to the three-dimensional perspective of each figure. The way in which the panels were positioned on the doors is interesting. Instead of using smaller panels, which would allow for more scenes, Ghiberti chose to use large panels that are easy to see. The miniature figures and heads surrounding the ten panels is another interesting point. The full body figures are Prophets. There are 20 prophets surrounding the panels. Most likely they were also taken from the Old Testament. Each of these prophets is in the motion of some type of action. Their action is probably what they were known for and why they became Prophets. Again, Ghiberti gives each a three-dimensional pose. He is past the old ways of symmetry and each figure looks realistic in pose. They have a weight shifted stance that adds to the realism of each. The detail on each is also magnificent. The folds in the garment are clearly depicted. The way the clothes drape on the bodies is also realistic. They gather more on one side as opposed to the other side. The way the bodies limbs press underneath the garments also show great attention to detail. There are 24 heads also placed on the outside of the panels. The people that these heads depict are unknown. The only head that is known is of Ghiberti himself. His head is located at the lower right corner of the Jacob and Esau panel. As you can tell by his self-portrayal, Ghiberti was a man about 30-40 years of age. Again, Ghiberti chose to pay great attention to detail for these heads. The way the heads were fashioned is like the techniques used by the Romans. Their heads come out of a circular ring, and part of their upper body is visible. The ways in which the heads are sculpted give them a background shadow that adds to their three-dimensionalism. Its been argued that the people that these heads represent friends of Ghiberti. The perspective used in each of the panels is unique. They all use linear perspective, which Ghiberti became known for. Like Massacio, Ghiberti used the perspective of building and how they relate to certain viewpoints. As the figures and buildings recede into the background, they all have a certain detail of spatial depth. The figures and buildings in the background are considerably smaller than those in the foreground are. The scenery in the background adds to the sense of depth in the panels. If you look at a certain panel, the horizon extends well past the current scene in each panel. Ghiberti knew how to use the vanishing point and could manipulate it to give each panel a certain view of the scene. The perspective of each panel adds to the th ree-dimensionality of each one. The way the buildings are sculpted is like those in Massacios paintings. Each panel holds a certain story of the Old Testament. In each panel, theyre different scenes of each story. Characters in the panels appear in different places, so that the whole story can be told instead of a particular scene. The panel of Jacob and Esau is one of the more interesting ones in the set. In this panel, Ghiberti tells the story of Esau and his son Jacob. Esau is choosing one of his sons that will take his place. Jacobs mother was able to get Jacob into Esaus room while he was about to choose his successor. Esau eventually chooses Jacob to take his place. Jacob and Esau are in many locations in the panel. In the panel, you can see Esaus birth, Jacob talking with Esau, Esau hunting, and Esaus mother talking with Jacob and also Jacob giving Esau his birthright. The building in the middle of the panel are interesting because of its use of perspective and how it recedes into the background. The building is an open hallway with a stairs. Columns with Corinthian capitals support the arches of the hallway. On top of the arches is a balcony. The ways in which the floor tiles are sculpted lead to the belief that there is a vanishing point that they all point to. Again, Ghiberti uses background scenery to add to the perspective of depth. The different scenes in the panel also add to the uniqueness of the door panels. In this panel, off in the distance, on the right, Esau can be seen hunting on a hill. On the left side of this panel, is the scene of Esaus birth. In the middle of the panel, Jacob is seen talking to Esau. On the right foreground, Jacob is bestowing upon Esau his birthright. The figures in this scene are sculpted in the subtractive method. Ghiberti took great care to make sure that each figure was fully represented in detail. The garment on each of the figures is realistic in the way they drape across the bodies. The folds of the cloth add to the sense of realism. You can tell that Ghiberti understood how clothes flow on a body. Each figures limbs can be seen pressing against the garments, allowing the viewer to see how the limbs bend and stretch underneath the clothes. Another interesting panel, is the one of Moses receiving the Ten Commandments. Ghiberti uses the horizon to add to depth of the panel. It seems as though the background extends indefinitely to the horizon. The tents in the background are shown as progressively smaller objects. This makes them seem as though they are far away from the scene in the panel. Each of the trees is of a different size, giving the sense of depth and distance from the viewer. The scene of Moses on top of Mt. Sinai, could have been done better. It seems that Mt. Sinai is more of a hill than a mountain. Ghiberti could have made Moses smaller in size or maybe the crowd below smaller in relative size. The depiction of God handing Moses the Ten Commandments is unique. God is shown as some sort of flowing cloud floating with a convoy of angels. Two angels are playing trumpets to sound the coming of God. The crowd below is seen praying and also some are cowering before God and this holy spectacle. The way in which Ghiberti chose to carve each figure and object in this scene is interesting. The figures in the foreground received a lot of attention to their detail and the way they seem to stick out of the panel. The buildings in the back dont have much detail in their carving. Toward the right of the panel, the battle rages on as the two armies fight. The figures seem as though in motion, because of the way they are carved and the pose they are in. Again, Ghiberti uses the technique of linear perspective in this panel. As the viewer looks toward the background, the images and figures seem to fade. This gives the objects in the background, such as the city, a sense of distance in relation to the battle in the foreground. The armor of each soldier is in great detail. You can see the different folds of leather of the soldiers skirts. The multitude of figures in the scene is handled well. Ghiberti was able to carve many heads and helmets onto the panel to give the appearance of many figures. Overall, the 3rd set of Baptistry Doors, also known as the Gates of Paradise, are a magnificent work of art. Even to this day, these doors are considered a masterpiece. They represent many of the styles and techniques used in the Renaissance. The original panels are now in the Museum of the Opera del Duomo. Ghiberti chose to use the gold highlights to give the panels a precious finish. These panels are well known for the use of perspective and pictorial effects.
